   PLEASE NOTE: This test was for the two DVD DISC EDITION OF "Time Bandits" PUT OUT WRITTEN by Anchor Bay.

First, I have observed that most of these contributions will be released for the somewhat disappointing Criterion edition in 1999. The version that I'll be reviewing is the much improved Divimax (high-definition digital transfer) from Anchor Bay. Has the two-DVD edition of Time Bandits from Anchor Bay is not perfect, but it is a strong improvement over the previous no frills version still in 1999 and spent the Criterion edition from the same period.

The high definition transfer and the fact that the film was enhanced for 16x9 televisions are significant improvements on the previous edition. The picture is sharper, although I have some minor edge enhancement and digital compression issues have taken note. By and large, but the picture looks wonderful. The first disc offers the film and it's not only has the great audio commentary compilation by Gilliam, Michael Palin, David Warner, John Cleese and Craig Warnock. This is a shame, because that would have the ultimate edition of the film.

Now the big complaint from some people is related to the image size. Gilliam shot Time Bandits to theatrically in 1.85:1 ratio are shown. Time Bandits was probably full screenshot (like Kubrick's films so that they do not "cut" are bad, when it is released). More than likely Gilliam matted the image after the film was shot. The worst looking DVD was the only set of the highly regarded Criterion Company. It featured interlace problems, an unstable picture (perhaps because of an error during the telecine transfer) and sound that sound left much to be desired. The aspect ratio (the dimension of the width and height h of the film on the screen) is correct here and beautifully detailed transfer is so sharp that sometimes you can even the boundaries (there is a hint of wires in some scenes) of Terry Gilliam's visual effects.
